Bush wants the Line Item Veto

It started with that obviously politically calculated line in the State of the Union speach, but I guess enough people actually know what the line item veto is for Bush to want to pass it. That, or Republicans are afraid enough of a Democratic takeover that they want to pass it while they can, and hold Democrats in check for at least two extra years.

Of course, this doesn't make sense for a number of reasons. For one, it isn't in the constitution (although it certainly seems to be amendment month in D.C.). For two, its the biggest power-snapping can o'worms anyone could open it. It won't end with a Democratic president. What it WILL mean is that legislation passed by the congress will be subject to being rewritten by the president, possibly distorting or totally reversing its meaning. Which will bring into question the point of having a legislature at all. And we think we've already seen the biggest expansion of executive power in recent history?
